The Ghosts of Warwick
Halloween can be a time when spirits are most active, with more ghost sightings, strange presences and energy felt throughout October. Warwick is home to its fair few haunted apparitions, including some that can be found on The Weird Walk of Warwick.
There’s the ghost of Fulke Greville, who appears in the tower of Warwick Castle, the kindly merchant Thomas Oken, who still resides in his tudor home 400 years after his death, and the black dog of Warwick, a beast from hell that still roams the streets.
Deadly Murders in Warwick
Warwick has seen its fair share of true crime over the years, including the night when the Gunpower Plot came to Warwick, where the Catholic Conspirators robber Warwick Castle of their horses.
But blood has been spilt on these streets, including the demise of young Hannah Miller, who was shot by her employer’s landlord just behind the Lord Leycester Hospital in 1812.
Of course, the very worst criminals in Warwickshire also had their court dates in Warwick, at Old Shire Hall, the former county courts.
Crime and Executions in Warwick
On Northgate Street is Old Shire Hall, which for hundreds of years saw the worst criminals in Warwickshire be tried, jailed and executed publicly! The execution site can still be seen on Barrack Street, and it’s said that over 200 criminals were executed there.
These include John Palmer and his family, who slit the throat of his wife in Snitterfield, and Ann Heytrey, the young woman who was believed to have murdered her mistress for seemingly no reason.
For other criminals, they were sent down town to Cape Road, where Warwick’s old prison used to be. Here thieves, would-be murderers and more were sentenced to hard labour, from anywhere between a few months to decades in prison!
