The Weird Walk of Warwick

A 90 minute walking tour through the streets of Warwick, hosted by your guide, the strange man known as Warrane Worthington.

You’ll hear tales of murder, ghostly visions, and famous characters from history.

Taking place on selected dates, The Weird Walk of Warwick takes you to historic buildings and special locations in Warwick town centre. There, your guide will tell you of the incredible stories that took place on that very spot.

You’ll hear incredible stories, from the hellhound that stalks the streets around Warwick Castle, to the night the Gunpower Plot came to town, and even the ghost that haunts the Lord Leycester Hospital.

As the night grows darker, you’ll head to the old courts of Warwickshire, where the very worst criminals in the county were brought to trial, and to their death.

If you’ve ever wanted to do a ghost walk or history tour of Warwick, this is your chance!

Why is it called the Weird Walk of Warwick? Because it contains too many strange stories to simply be called a regular Walking Tour!

The Route

1. The Lord Leycester Hospital

Meet your guide outside The Lord Leycester by the bollards, where you will hear how this remarkable building first came to be, and the strange ghost that appeared when it first opened.

You’ll then hear about a terrifying murder, that took place only metres away from where you stand.

2. Warwick Castle Coach House

You’ll stand just on the other side of the Castle’s modern entrance, to hear about a most daring heist that took place in Warwick, involving a gang we are all familiar with! This is all about the night that the Gunpowder Plot came to Warwick.

3. Oken Tea Rooms

Also known as Oken House, the former home of Thomas Oken, a legend of the town, former mayor and generous benefactor who left his entire will to the town of Warwick upon his death. But he apparently wasn’t always going to give the town his money. Find out what really happened when Thomas died, and hear how he apparently still comes back to visit…

4. Warwick Castle Coach Entrance

Once upon a time, this grand gate was how horse and carriages made their way to Warwick Castle, but before then, it would have been the sight of England’s most hated noble. Here you will learn of Piers Gaveston, the favourite of Kind Edward II. You’ll hear why he became such a hated figure, and about his unique execution right here in Warwick.

5. Mill Street

Arguably the most terrifying story of the night, with a rare view of Warwick Castle (making this the perfect photo opportunity). This is the spot where nearby lived Moll Bloxham, a servant of Warwick Castle. But some believe Moll was a woman of strange powers, a witch whose curse still haunts the town today. This is the story, of the Hellhound of Warwick.

6. Fulke Greville

Before the tour continues, our guide will go into more detail of Fulke Greville, Baron Brooke of Warwick and favourite of King James I and Queen Elizabeth I. But despite his fame and popularity, Fulke made one error that would prove fatal. Learn how Fulke’s life ended, and where his ghost may still be seen today.

7. St Marys Church

One of Warwick’s oldest and most magnificent building, the church of St Mary is now burial place of Warwick’s most famous faces. But it was once the site of a devastating fire. Here we uncover how the Great Fire of Warwick ended, and which legends of England are buried there today.

8. Old Shire Hall

Former home of the Warwickshire County Courts, this building would once have seen hundreds of people waiting outside in the hopes of attending a trial. Learn about some of the crimes and punishment dished out in Warwick’s past, and hear the tale of Warwickshire’s strangest ever court cases.

9. Old Gaol Cell

A lone, wooden door over 300 years old stands on the corner of Barrack Street. Here we tell one of the most tragic murders to occur in Warwickshire, in a crime that still baffles many even to this day.

10. Execution Site

Over 200 criminals lost their lives at a public execution in Warwick, but the spot where it happened is hidden. There are no signs or clues to where you can find it, until now. Your guide will take you to stand where thousands stood before to watch criminals swing on the end of a rope.

11. Market Square

Warwick has held a market every week for around 700 years, but it is the court rooms that adjoin it we are interested in. The final story of the night is a tale of witchcraft in Warwickshire, and the terrible murder that occurred because of it. Who is the real villain in this story? That is for you to decide!
